The 2-Inch Rule: Finding Your Belt Size
Most people assume their belt size is the same as their pant size, but this is the most common mistake in menswear. Our Advanced Belt Size Calculator accounts for the extra material of your pants and the way a belt sits on your hips.
How to Measure for a Belt
There are three reliable ways to find your size:
- The Pant Size Method: Simply take your off-the-shelf pant size and add 2 inches. For example, if you wear size 34 pants, you need a size 36 belt.
- The Direct Waist Method: Use a flexible measuring tape to measure your waist exactly where you intend to wear the belt (over your pants). Add 2 inches to this number to find your belt size.
- The Existing Belt Method: Lay your current belt flat. Measure from the fold where the buckle meets the leather to the hole you currently use. This is your true belt size.
International Belt Size Conversions
Belt sizing varies significantly between the US and Europe:
- US Sizing: Measured in inches (e.g., 32, 34, 36).
- EU Sizing: Measured in centimeters, rounded to the nearest 5cm (e.g., 85, 90, 95). Our calculator instantly converts between these systems so you can shop globally with confidence.
Pro-Tip: The "Middle Hole" Fit
A properly sized belt should always be fastened on the middle hole (usually the 3rd hole). This provides the most balanced aesthetic and allows for minor weight fluctuations in either direction.
