Clinical Overview: The STOP-BANG Screen
The STOP-BANG questionnaire is an extremely effective and easy-to-use screening tool for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It was developed to help anesthesiologists identify patients who may be at high risk for perioperative respiratory complications.
The STOP-BANG Mnemonic
The questionnaire consists of 8 yes/no questions:
- Snoring: Do you snore loudly?
- Tired: Do you often feel tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the day?
- Observed: Has anyone observed you stop breathing or choking during sleep?
- Pressure: Do you have or are you being treated for high blood pressure?
- BMI: Is your Body Mass Index more than 35 kg/m²?
- Age: Are you older than 50 years?
- Neck: Is your neck circumference greater than 40 cm (16 inches)?
- Gender: Are you male?
Risk Stratification
STOP-BANG Score = Number of 'Yes' Answers
- Low Risk: 0-2 yes answers.
- Intermediate Risk: 3-4 yes answers.
- High Risk: 5-8 yes answers.
