Clinical Overview: The STOP-BANG Screen

The STOP-BANG questionnaire is an extremely effective and easy-to-use screening tool for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It was developed to help anesthesiologists identify patients who may be at high risk for perioperative respiratory complications.

The STOP-BANG Mnemonic

The questionnaire consists of 8 yes/no questions:

  • Snoring: Do you snore loudly?
  • Tired: Do you often feel tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the day?
  • Observed: Has anyone observed you stop breathing or choking during sleep?
  • Pressure: Do you have or are you being treated for high blood pressure?
  • BMI: Is your Body Mass Index more than 35 kg/m²?
  • Age: Are you older than 50 years?
  • Neck: Is your neck circumference greater than 40 cm (16 inches)?

Frequently Asked Questions
